The Gnostic Mass is the central ritual of the Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica. And as we read in the Liber XV, there are five Officers, five persons that personify the major archetypes of the alchemical marriage, as it is portrayed in ATU VΙ “The Lovers” of the Thoth Tarot.
Without exception, we all participate in this marriage, through our daily life (when we seek to unite the fragmented pieces of our perception), through our psychology (when we try to establish communication between the conscious and the unconscious), but also through our magical work and so we seek a living relationship between our mortal part with the divine.
All the above reasons make it fair to say that each and any one of us is a Priest and a Priestess in a quest for union. But everything happens under the supervision of a mediator, a Hermetic spirit, for Mercury is the catalyst of the coniunctio oppositorum! Hermes is the messenger of the Law, the Logos personified – and that magical role is what the Deacon of the Gnostic Mass performs.
For it is he who utters the Word of the New Aeon. Because he is the one who reveals the Creed of our Church. For he is an angel who guides the Congregation to the empirical truth of the Book of the Law – he is the vehicle by which Liber AL has come into existence in the present time.
The Deacon is white and yellow, like the air, and it is the air that is the fuel of life. Inhaling and exhaling, pronouncing meaning and internalizing the world or AL – LA, everything and nothing, as an integral continuity and balance. This is the secret of Liber AL as decoded in Liber 31 by Aleister Crowley’s favorite student, frater Achad.
Back in 1913, the Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica had only some basic instructions from its founder regarding its sacred vestments. Nowadays, we don’t have to wear clothes, fabrics and designs that Christians or other great traditions have. The Thelemic Current is maturing and the artistic workshop LOGOS 373 with respect to the Thelemic literature and to the metaphysical principles of Beauty – as a guide to the Eternal and the High – designs and offers to every practitioner in the mysteries of the Gnostic Mass a complete new Thelemic Garment for the Deacon.
The Deacon’s robe, consists of two parts:
The PHELONION is a liturgical vestment worn over the white Robe. It is high quality velvet in a light shade of yellow, decorated with gold trim, and embroidered near the Deacon’s lungs with the key of the Book of the Law, the pillars of the New Aeon of the Child (THELEMA and AGAPE in Greek) as well as the sacred sign of our holy Order. The shape of the garment on the back resembles the wings of angels so that our holy Logos can be spread throughout the world.
The WHITE ROBE is the classic Tau robe with elaborate gold trim on the edges and hand-stitched with Radzimir fabric, a fine kind of silk with a lustrous appearance.
We design the Deacon’s vestment (as well as all other garments for the Gnostic Mass) in such a way that it can communicate the preeminence of its archetypal role. Τhe people who wear them should feel glorious about what they performe and thus we highlighted the Deacon’s robe with metallic yellow (i.e. gold) and not just common yellow. Let him be like an angel on earth and not a passing mortal…
