Magic Robe of Abramelin
$127.00 – $754.00
The book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage is perhaps the most famous of all magical grimoires of the Western occult tradition. Written in the 15th century by a Kabbalist Jew named Abraham whose journay to Egypt revealed a great secret rite, prove to be centuries latter a major source of inspiration for certain members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and the subject of serious study by notable figures in the occult scene such as Aleister Crowley.
And while other books of magic of the same period focus on the summoning of demonic entities for the indulgence of their summoner, the purpose of the Abramelin book is the knowledge and conversation with the practitioner’s Holy Guardian Angel, through a very specific and extensive ritual that lasts several months.
From the various manuscripts that have survived, two are the most famous of all, that of S.L. MacGregor Mathers (French version) and that of Georg Dehn and Steven Guth (German version).
In both of these texts we find the same instructions regarding the magician’s garment. It is about two Robes and a Crown. Both texts agree on clothing. They differ slightly only in terms of the heads’s regalia.
Thus, in Mather’s translation we read that the first cloth is that of a «tunic of linen, large and white, with well and properly made sleeves. The other robe will be of crimson or scarlet silk with gold, and it should not be longer than just unto the knees, with sleeyes of similar stuff. As for these vestments, there is no particular rule for them; nor any special instructions to be followed; […] You shall also make a girdle of silk of the same colour as the tunic, wherewithal you shall be girded».
As for the head, we read in the German version that «on your head you should have a hair band of golden-colored silk; fasten onto it the highest names of Adonai cut from metal. Similar to the head band of Aaron». This last sentence proves that the influence for the Abramelin Stole isn’t only the white Robe of the Solomonic magical tradition, but also the elaborate garment worn by the High Priest of the Jews (Exodus 28). With a difference, for as the French version of Mathers explains to us, on the head there can be a «woven fillet of filk and gold» or a «a beautiful Crown».
The artistic workshop LOGOS 373, by faithfully following the instructions of the grimoires, and by giving emphasis on the dramatic aesthetics of the oriental religious vestments, introduces a garment specially designed for Abramelin’s ritual.
The whole set consists of three parts:
(1) A WHITE ROBE made of fine quality linen fabric.
(2a) A CRIMSON ROBE worn over the white tunic, made entirely by hand from silk of the type Soie Sauvage (also known as Shantung) which is universally considered to be the closest to natural, «wild» silk. This type of fabric is imported from India, and have a distinct weave with small knots in their texture which causes them to change their burning color (between red and crimson) depending on the lighting, like a candle when it flickers… for the mage is like a candle burning his/her heart for knowledge and conversation with the Angel…
(2b) A CRIMSON BELT made of silk with gold ornate embroidery.
(3) CROWN of gilded brass engraved with the names of God according to the instructions we read in “The Key of Solomon the King”: On the front the Hebrew letters of the name ‘Yod Heh Vau Heh’, on the back ‘Adonai’, on the right side is the name ‘El’, and on the left is ‘Elohim’. The Crown comes with a white linen headpiece for added comfort, inspired by Crowley’s cap of maintenance (Liber ABA), for the cap «is also symbolic of the flood of glory that pours upon the Magician from above. […] The band of gold is the eternal circle of perfection».
