What is Theurgy
Theurgy is a form of magic that has its roots in ancient Greek philosophy and religion. The term “theurgy” itself means “divine work” or “divine action,” and it is often associated with Hecate, the Greek goddess of magic and witchcraft.
In theurgy, practitioners use rituals and incantations to summon and communicate with divine beings. They believe that by doing so, they can achieve spiritual enlightenment and gain access to higher levels of consciousness.
The use of a cloak is often a significant aspect of theurgy, as it symbolizes the practitioner’s ability to move between worlds and communicate with the divine. Hecate is also a commonly invoked deity in theurgy, as she is believed to hold the key to the mysteries of magic and the supernatural.
The practice of theurgy is not without controversy, with some critics arguing that it is a form of superstition or even demonic worship. However, its followers maintain that it is a legitimate spiritual practice that can bring about profound experiences of transformation and transcendence.
Overall, theurgy is a complex and fascinating aspect of ancient Greek magic and philosophy. Its use of ritual, symbolism, and invocation speaks to a deep human desire to connect with the divine and explore the mysteries of the universe.
How can we practice Theurgy
Theurgy is a spiritual practice developed by Neoplatonists (mainly Iamblichus and Proclus) in ancient Greece, that seeks to achieve union with the higher realms through the use of rituals and other esoteric techniques. One of these methods are the use of Synthemata.
Synthemata are symbolic gestures or actions used to facilitate a connection with the divine. These may include offerings of incense or other sacred substances, rites such as ritual bathing, certain symbols and the recitation of sacred prayers.
For example, a Theurgist may perform a series of hand gestures while chanting a hymn, or wear the symbols that tunes his / her actions with a particular deity. Also a Theurgist is dressed with the symbols of his / her deity in order to became «agalma» a living icon of the God / Goddess.
Based on this metaphysics, the Artistic Workshop LOGOS 373 uses the religious technology of Theurgy to create a ceremonial Robe for the contemporary invocator of Hekate. In this special design, the torches of the goddess are embroidered on the sleeves as if the invocator’s hands eternally hold Her sacred fire. On the chest the Orarium is written with the hymn of Proclus so that the invoker breathes the Holy Word and his / her heart beats to the rhythm of this same Words. On the hood we find the half moon as the third eye of the Goddess that sees everything in the night. At the base of the Robe is written the four occult names of Hekate according to the Greek Magical Papyri. These titles, written in ancient Greek, are embroidered at the four points of the tunic so that the invocator faces each of the four directions with the corresponding magical Synthemata.
